About Ovarian Cancer Chemotherapy Drugs
During ovarian cancer chemotherapy treatment, there are several types of drugs that may be used.
It is good to be familiar and knowledgeable about these drugs, their benefits and possible side effects. Below is a list of the chemotherapy drugs commonly used.
-Platinum agents such as Carboplatin or Cisplatin These are the most important chemotherapy drugs in the fight against ovarian cancer.
-Taxanes such as Taxol (Paclitaxel) and Taxotere (Docetaxel) These drugs, in combination with platinum agents, form the recommended intial treatment (following surgery) for ovarian cancer.
-Other drugs include topotecan, liposomal doxorubicin (Doxil), gemcitabine, etoposide, cyclophosphamide, and several others. These drugs give a patient many options for treatment if the cancer recurs.
-Newer agents include bevacizumab (Avastin) or many other drugs available through clinical research trials.
